Lehigh Learning Academy School Philosophy
At Lehigh Learning Academy, we have a fundamental belief that students respond best to high expectations and limit setting, combined with high levels of support. We provide this in an alternative school setting, by employing restorative practices to hold students accountable for their actions, and build a positive school culture that leads to real and lasting behavior changes.
Lehigh Learning Academy utilizes components of Glasser’s Choice theory which emphasizes that students can control their own behavior. A Tag Board demonstrates which student is allowed what privileges (a red light/green light metaphor is used in the program). A student is achieving a green light status allowing him access to reinforcing privileges. This program also is warm and supportive to the needs of the individual student.
Students also receive group counseling, social milieu, and individual counseling. The program staff are trained to deal exceptionally well with students who have disabilities and/or problems with drug and alcohol. Students receive both an academic and therapeutic benefits with the programming at Lehigh Learning Academy.
With a student-teacher ratio of 6:1, we create the “one room school house” where students of different age groups work together in the same class. In this inclusive setting, kids not only learn from the teacher, but from one another as well, and the learning process becomes everyone’s responsibility. Given the opportunity to become members of this learning community, the students develop self-reliance and confidence, enabling them to make decisions and to take responsibility for the results of their actions. Inclusion is about membership and belonging to a community.
Lehigh Learning Academy students are encouraged to help one another and learn through cooperation. The school is committed to values that are non-violent and nondiscriminatory regarding race, religion, creed, or sex. By working together in a community setting, the activities of the school become relevant in everyday life. All school activities take place in a firm but fair environment that nurtures self-confidence and awareness, free expression of emotions and mutual respect. |
